Why LPG is the fuel choice for farming and agriculture

Why LPG is the fuel choice for farming and agriculture

The farming sector, like many others, is facing unprecedented challenges with post-Brexit labour shortages, the lasting effects of Covid 19, environmental issues and the shift to technologically advanced methods. An essential sector and a vitally important part of the overall economy providing 64% of the food eaten in the UK and contributing over £120 billion to the country's economy according to Countryside Online, a membership category of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), farming and it's farmers rely heavily on a farm's fuel source to keep crops in good condition and animals healthy. With all these pressures, it's more important than ever that farmers choose a clean, reliable and cost-effective fuel for all their energy requirements.

The good news for the farming industry is that recent changes to red diesel taxation that came into effect on 1st April this year do not apply in the same way as they have impacted on other industries. Vehicles and machinery used in agriculture (including fish-farming, horticulture and forestry) have retained their entitlement to use red diesel. However, whilst tractors and other agricultural machines often rely on diesel, bulk LPG is the perfect energy for crop drying, rearing poultry, horticulture or any other farming requirements - a sustainable way of keeping farms operating, it helps to reduce costs, lower emissions and help the agricultural industry to remain competitive in general.

So why choose LPG?

Stored in LPG bulk tanks, farm propane is ideal for farming in remote locations. Both cleaner and greener than other fuel options, it is perfect for farming needs. It's many benefits include:

  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Economical
  • Reliable
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Compliant
  • Versatile
  • Secure

Commercial gas is virtually impossible to steal in comparison to oil, which with high prices at present, can be a real target for theft. So bulk LPG offers a more secure option. And for additional peace of mind, LPG can be stored in an underground LPG bulk tank where the whole tank is buried underground leaving only the access cover visible. A discreet solution to your bulk LPG storage needs.

LPG in horticulture:

Bulk LPG produces a highly controllable heat, making it a more precise drying process and allowing farmers to maintain ideal levels of moisture without over-drying. Plus, because of propane's clean burning qualities, (it doesn't produce black carbon, which is a major contributor to climate change), it is ideal in horticulture, ensuring crops are safe from contamination. Constant temperatures, essential for commercially grown plants and flowers, coupled with the bonus of CO2 generated by the combustion of commercial propane gas, stimulate crop growth and flower yields. A win-win!

LPG for Poultry Rearing:

Poultry rearing requires a huge amount of energy. A constant heat supply is crucial to the survival and health of birds and live-stock, especially in the colder winter months. Commercial LPG heating, unlike other alternatives such as oil or electricity, produces moisture at the perfect level to promote speedy feathering and weight gain, helping to improve chick growth as well as to reduce the risk of common diseases and creating a stress-free environment. And we all need less stress in our lives!

LPG and Crop Drying:

Whether you're drying wheat, barley, maize or rapeseed, LPG is a clean, safe and effective fuel source. Preserving your crops for longer by controlling moisture and temperature levels is essential. Drying with commercial propane gas enhances efficiency and cuts wastage, helping to maintain optimum drying conditions. As a clean burning source of energy, LPG reduces the risk of water ingress, fuel sediment and grain combustion - and as there is no soot build-up, it can prolong the life of your farming equipment, reducing maintenance and reducing costs too.

And LPG isn't just a commercial fuel - it can also heat your farmhouse and even be used as a cooking gas.

Future of LPG:

In July 2019, Liquid Gas UK, the Trade Association for BioLPG and LPG in the UK, launched their 2040 Vision in which they set out their ambitions to transition the industry to BioLPG by 2040, demonstrating their role in the UK's Net Zero future. According to Liquid Gas Uk's industry census, over £100m is currently being invested in BioLPG, with a total investment of £600m into the LPG industry planned over the next five years.

We all have a responsibility to do our bit to take care of the environment and make sustainable choices for the future. BioLPG is a renewable gas made from a mix of biological feedstocks and processes and an ideal energy solution for businesses wishing to reduce their carbon footprint as it reduces carbon emissions by up to 90%. A perfect fit for farms and off-grid rural homes.

Chemically identical to LPG, it is completely compatible with all existing LPG products and enjoys the same reliability and efficiency as standard LPG, with no compromise on performance. It is a drop-in solution so can be blended with traditional LPG, and requires no retrofit or replacement costs. And just like LPG, BioLPG offers cleaner air with low NOx, SOx and particulate matter.

At Northern Energy, we're always looking to give you more environmentally-friendly fuel options and can't wait to offer BioLPG. So watch this space!
